The Merkava (Hebrew: ) is Israel’s iconic main battle tank, developed for the Israel Defense Forces with a focus on crew protection and battlefield survivability. Development began in 1970, and the Merkava entered official service in 1979. The Merkava Mk.2, introduced in the early 1980s, featured improved armor and firepower. It saw extensive combat during the 1982 Lebanon War and has become a symbol of Israeli armored strength.
