The Merkava (Hebrew: , “chariot”) is Israels premier main battle tank, designed by the Israel Defense Forces for maximum crew protection and mobility. Development began in 1970, and the tank entered service in 1979. The Merkava Mk.2 variant was introduced in the early 1980s with upgrades to armor layout, firepower, and battlefield electronics. It was first used extensively during the 1982 Lebanon War and remains a symbol of Israeli innovation in armored warfare.
