Commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on November 15, 1932, the U.S. Navy heavy cruiser Indianapolis (CA-35) played a pivotal role in World War II. From her simulated bombardment exercises near Hawaii on December 7, 1941, to becoming the flagship of Admiral Raymond Spruances Fifth Fleet in 1943, the Indianapolis led numerous Central Pacific campaigns.
Severely damaged in March 1945, she returned to Mare Island for a two-month upgrade, receiving state-of-the-art radar, electronic gun sights, and new Curtiss Seahawks. After repairs, she departed San Francisco on July 16, 1945, delivering secret cargo to Tinian Islandhome to the B-29 bomber baseand completed the mission on July 26. Tragically, on July 30, she was sunk by torpedoes from the submarine I-58, just two weeks before the end of the war.
