Despite the availability of assault Sturmgeschutz guns, there was a need to developed self-propelled howitzer Sturmhaubitze capable of destroying tanks and other targets, including those outside the direct line of fire. Assault howitzers were different from the basic version by a 105mm howitzer with a 28-caliber length barrel and ammunition. the concept of mounting a 105mm howitzer on the hull of an assault gun was deemed perfect. The first nine assault howitzers first participated in battle on Nov. 22, 1942. Ausf. F/8 assault guns were used as a base. Since March 1943, assault howitzers were produced on the basis of the Ausf. G assault guns. Changes made to the design of assault guns proceeded in parallel with changes made to the Sturmhaubitze design. So, in 1944, part of the howitzers received cast masks shaped like a pig’s snout. Along with the Sturmgeschutze, assault howitzers took part in fighting until the end of the war.
