The M4A2 Sherman was a welded-hull variant that was powered by dual GMC diesel engines. Produciton began in April 1942, and approximately 4,900 M4A2 small-hatch Shermans were produced. The U.S. Army preferred the M4 with radial engines, so the M4A2 was supplied to other countries under the lend-lease act. Usurers of the M4A2 included Great Britain, France, Poland and Russia. The United States Marine Corps also used the M4A2 in the South Pacific theater of operation.
