The Magach is the main battle tank of the Israeli Defense Forces, whose name means “strike” in Hebrew. Various types were developed based on the American M48 Patton and M60 tanks. Israel initially deployed a vehicle based on the American M4 Sherman tank with improvements; in the 1950s, it developed the M60 Super Sherman, but in order to compete with the Soviet T-54 and T-55 tanks used by Arab countries, it proceeded with the development of tanks based on the more powerful M48 Patton. Vehicles with Israeli-specific improvements and renovations were given the Magach name. The Magach has been updated every time it has experienced combat in the Middle East War, and a type based on the M60 has also appeared. It was active as the main Israeli battle tank for a long time.
