The 79th New York Infantry regiment was organized in New York State in June 1859. Initially composed of Scottish men, it was one of the three regiments that formed the 4th Brigade of the 1st Division of the New York State Army before the Civil War. They fought on the side of the Union in the Civil War and gained fame in almost every major battle, including the Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Antietam.
