The Punic Wars were a series of wars fought between the Roman Republic and Carthage over the supremacy of the Mediterranean Sea in the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C. “Punic” is Latin for the Phoenicians (Carthage is a Phoenician colony city-state), and is the name given to the Carthaginians by the Romans. From the invasion of Sicily by the Roman Army in 264 B.C. to the destruction of Carthage in 146 B.C., three wars were waged. Rome won the war and gained control of the seas in the western Mediterranean and many provinces.
