The North African front in the early part of World War II is full of stories about the battles between the German Afrika Korps led by Rommel, and the British 8th Army led by Montgomery. Among these tales is Operation Ochsenkopf, which took place from Feb. 26 to March 4, 1943. It was the final stage of the fierce battle between the German and Allied forces, and is said to be the last organized battle for the German Army in North Africa. The battle centered on the 501st Heavy Tank Battalion, which was the first to deploy Tiger I tanks; it took place over Sidi Nsil in Tunisia. The British Army countered the powerful Tiger I with 25-pounders and Churchill tanks. The German Army lost many combat vehicles, including the Tiger I, and was forced to retreat.

This model kit from Dragon reproduces the Tiger I belonging to the 501st Heavy Tank Battalion on the North African Front in 1/35 scale. The model is based on the latest research by David Byrden, who is known as an expert on the Tiger I. This kit recreates the Tiger I from Operation Ochsenkopf, which took place in the final years in North Africa. Ammunition boxes from the Panzer III turret storage box were additionally installed on both sides of the storage box at the rear of the turret, spare tracks were attached to various parts of the vehicle, and a toolbox was added to the right rear mudguard — you can’t miss how each and every feature is clearly expressed! This kit also uses prefabricated Magic Tracks for ease of assembly, and machined aluminum parts are included for the gun barrel; copper wire is also included.
